Born in 1957, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, about twenty-five miles outside of Philadelphia, Dane E. Tilghman would become one of America's most sought-after African American artists. His works are in the Baseball Hall of Fame and at public institutions and universities. Dane’s work has been on exhibition at the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Howard University, Widener University, West Chester University, the University of Pennsylvania and countless others.  He has won numerous awards and he created a 8×40 foot mural for Turner Stadium in Atlanta!

His passion for art began at the age of four or five, when he began mimicking his older brother's drawings and eventually began drawing "all the time." Later, at Conestoga High School in Berwyn, he was in an art program that met for four periods every day, and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts at Kutztown University.

Dane Tilghman has taken his artwork towards new dimensions, starting with realism and moving towards a style that showcases his own interpretations of surrealism, impressionism and primitive elongation. His figurative paintings reflect a stylistic reference to artists Modigliani and Thomas Hart Benton.

A professional painter for over 20 years, Tilghman has also developed a distinctive and creative approach to depict artistic images of the common man, woman and child. Dane's images are inspired by African Americans depicted as "Everyday People" in and out of daily life, popular entertainment, and the world of sports. Over the years, his constant refinement and development of these images and styles of painting has helped to establish him as one of the premier painters of African American Golf Art and Negro League Baseball images.

One of Dane’s biggest honors was to have two reproductions given to Nelsen Mandela by the Black McDonalds’ Association of Philadelphia not long after Mandela was released from prison.
